On National Geographic’s Repossessed, a reality show about a company that confronts people in order to repossess their vehicles, being able to capture authentic, emotional moments as they are happening is a must. Enter AJA’s Ki Pro tapeless recording device.

Bradley Levin, director of Repossessed and co-executive director of Stick Figure Productions, knew that being able to record without interruptions was crucial to the show. “Last season…we captured onto 33-minute DVCPRO HD tapes. Every 33 minutes we had to stop to change tapes, which was very disruptive – particularly with the nature of the material that we shoot.”

After attending an Emerging Technologies workshop at Abel, he came away impressed with the versatility and portability of the Ki Pro. Levin and the show’s DP Antonio Rossi devised a special rig that consisted of two Iconix HD lipstick cameras and two AJA Ki Pros. The whole thing could be installed quickly and easily onto whatever car or truck the crew were shooting. “Ki Pro enabled four hours of continuous recording which has been ideal for our fast-paced production environment. Once we went into editorial, we could FireWire the SSD drives and bring our material right into Final Cut Pro. It couldn’t get any easier,” Levin says. Along with the Ki Pro’s low power consumption and compact size, he also praised the device’s rugged construction, “The Ki Pros worked flawlessly…through rough weather conditions, in a car during high speed getaways, going up and down ramps, on rough roads, and in the back of a tow truck hauling a heavy load…The Ki Pros performed beautifully in every situation and climate during a rigorous shooting schedule.”

KI Pro

AJA has just released firmware version 1.1 for the Ki Pro, and going up .1 turns out to be a major upgrade. Here is a list of the improvements :

- ProRes 422 LT and Proxy recording has been added. These formats are supported in Final Cut Pro 7, and allow for longer recording times at minimal quality loss.

- 720P variable frame rate support has now been added as well. This is great for VariCam users that want 720p24 (23.98), 720p25 and 720p30 (29.97) native recording.

- 1080p support has also been improved by enabling the auto-detection of 1080p 23.98, 1080p 24, 1080p 25 and 1080p 29.97 signals. This, along with PsF playback, gives the Ki Pro more functionality for high end users.

There have been a few updates this month to some of our newest products. Nexto has improved their Video Storage Pro (NVS2500) with several updates. The first is support for MOV wrapped MPEG2 files, so files made in the JVC HM700/100 and from the Convergent Design devices (nanoFlash) can be previewed. They have also fixed some bugs and improved compatibility with USB drives. Download the firmware and read about all the updates here – NVS2500 Firmware 1.06.

AJA has also been working on adding function to their Ki Pro portable recorder. The latest firmware adds an ARM recording option that will allow users to have the device start recording on timecode start. This is an important improvement for anyone wanting to slave the Ki Pro to their camera. Additionally they have made several improvements to stability and user interface. On Thursday, August 27th, Abel presented an Emerging Technology Workshop to a full house at our New York City office. The event, produced in cooperation with HD Expo / Createasphere, focused on a new generation of affordable and flexible acquisition tools.

In the first session, Andy Shipsides gave an overview of two new solid-state JVC cameras, the HM700 and HM100. A highlight of this session was the screening of footage by Director of Photography Don Lenzer from Children of Abraham, a recent documentary shot with the HM700. Smokey Forester, the project’s producer, was in attendance.

Andy and AJA’s Jay Ignaszewski then unveiled the very first AJA Ki Pro off the production line! The session highlighted ProRes recording and other breakthrough capabilities of this anxiously awaited device. Andy and Jay also discussed the creative impact Ki Pro can have when used on compact, as well as larger format, cameras.

To round out the evening, Andy teamed up with Jem Schofield, of theC47.com, to discuss how HDSLR cameras are changing the landscape of HD video. Jem and Andy delved into the specifics of a couple of these HDSLRs, namely the Canon 5D Mark II and the Panasonic Lumix GH1, and showed off some of the accessories designed to make the most of their video capabilities.

The workshop ended with an informal hands-on session. Attendees were able mingle, play with the gear and chat with the manufacturer reps.

KI Pro
AJA has just announced their new KI Pro tapeless video recorder. I’m really excited about this little box, which has a host of new features that are really amazing. It is a rugged field recorder that encodes video directly to 10-bit Apple ProRes 422. The ProRes HQ codec has really impressed us, with quality only paralleled with the highest end HD acquisition formats. AJA has done a great job working with ProRes, first with the IoHD and now with the KI Pro. The box is a fully functional recorder going directly to hard disc (HDD or SSD), or on to ExpressCard 34 media cards. Yes that’s right, it can record to your SxS cards or other ExpressCard 34 media. For video inputs it has SD/HD-SDI, HDMI, and Component video. It also takes timecode input, 2 audio XLR inputs, and is powered by a standard 4-pin XLR cable. With all of these options you can record the output of just about any camera on the market, and even attach it to a camera with an optional accessory.
