Last year Dedolight introduced the clever, on-camera Ledzilla LED light. Ledzilla features the award-winning Dedo condenser lens technology for focusing and has removable barndoor and filter attachments for shaping the light. Back in November, Abel was lucky enough to host a special series of workshops presented by the inventor of Dedolights himself, German cinematographer Dedo Weigert. The event was filmed and we’ve put together a ten-minute-long excerpt especially for viewing on the web. In it, Dedo explains how to set up a five-piece lighting kit most effectively in an interview situation. Check out the video here on our main site.
Last night, Abel NY hosted a lighting seminar presented by Dedo Weigert, inventor of Dedolights.
Traveling to America exclusively for this event, Dedo drew a packed crowd of filmmakers, many of whom continued to talk with Dedo long after the formal end of the event. Keeping the audience engrossed with anecdotes culled from his years as a Munich-based cinematographer, he provided a glimpse into the genesis of his line of Dedolights. He emphasized that his lights weren’t meant to compete with any other manufacturers’, but—like the different paint brushes in an artist’s kit—each had its purpose. He then proceeded to demonstrate a number of his products, discussing the particular lighting situations in which each would shine. During a 15-minute break, attendees got a chance to get their hands on all the lights and accessories that Dedo demonstrated during his presentation.

Recently I was asked why we sell seemingly similar lights at such different prices. The easy answer is that they offer different lensing, which means different performance. But I thought there had to be a better way to quantify and qualify that, so I made a chart that lays out some of the technical differences such as number of footcandles at a given beam spread. That’s easy, as it can be gleaned from any manufacturer’s website. So I also set up a comparative display of three lights to show qualitatively their differences. I compared the Lowel Pro 200w, Arri Junior 150w, and Dedolight 150w. Both the chart and the display are set up in our NY showroom, and you can watch a video of my test on our website.
There are many small LED lights on the market, but most have little to no control, splashing their light out all over the place. Dedotec has taken their renown condenser lensing technology and applied it to a small LED light fixture to make a very versatile and controllable on-camera unit.
