Today, Vision Research revealed the new Phantom Miro LC320S Digital Cinema High-Speed Camera, which brings together the best of the two Phantom camera lines. The Phantom Flex, and its predecessor the HD Gold, introduced straightforward, on-camera controls and ease of use to digital high-speed imaging, while Miro cameras offer the same uncompressed RAW HD high-speed capture a in small, lightweight package. Now, with the addition of an on-board LCD touchscreen with full menu controls, the Miro LC320S is the first truly portable, self-contained digital cinema high frame rate camera.

Can you playback saved cines from the mag?

No, this is one difference from the Phantom Flex. The CineMags used on the Phantom Flex are much higher speed and therefore much more expensive compared to the CineFlash storage used on the Miro LC320S. As shown in the video, the shot is available for immediate playback from the camera’s internal memory but once it is saved to the CineFlash and cleared from the camera buffer the file must be downloaded from the CineFlash and played back on a computer. Download speeds from the CineFlash into a computer system are extremely fast, much faster than on the CineMags, so it is a quick process to access the files. If you do need immediate access to previous shots, I suggest you keep a separate recorder such as a KiPro Mini connected to the Miro.

I have some footage coming in from the Miro in a few weeks and am looking into the post pro workflow. Once I have the raw files on a HD, is there a conversion process, or can I bring them straight into a FCP?

There are several ways to handle the Phantom .cin RAW files. If you wish to go straight into a FCP system, then the easiest way would be to use the GlueTools Phantom Toolkit. This program will operate in the background on your Mac and when it sees a Phantom file trying to be used in a system that supports QuickTime (such as Final Cut Pro), it will invisibly open up that file inside a QuickTime wrapper structure. Once you install GlueTools on your machine, you simply drop the Phantom files onto your FCP timeline and GlueTools invisibly does the rest. It’s just playing out the files in a preview, so it will need to render on output, but GlueTools is pretty efficient so if you have a decently powerful computer it will do it in realtime. GlueTools can be purchased off their website.
