NAB ’12: Zeiss Announces New Compact Zoom

Zeiss today announced their new Compact Zoom, a 70-200 T2.9. The Compact Zoom covers not only Super-35, but in fact the full frame 36mmx24mm format, just like the Compact Primes. Also like the CP.2s, the 70-200 has interchangeable lens mounts, switching between PL, Nikon, Canon Micro 4/3 and Sony E mounts. The Compact Zoom weighs just 6.2 pounds and will be available later this year for less than $20,000.

Very cool. Why is it cheaper than I thought? Does it have any limitations?

I am curious how it might match with other manufacturers zooms. Specifically the Fuji 19-90mm.

You’re just in sticker-shock from other lenses. Zeiss is committed to keeping the Compact Primes and Zooms affordable.

We’ll have to test more to know. The Zeiss 70-200 is still just a bit past prototype stage at this point.

Being part of the CP-series, this is Carl Zeiss’ “entry level” lens segment offering, correct?

Don’t assume that lower cost means lower value. For example, the CP.2 50mm Macro is one of the finest examples of a macro available today, yet it is quite affordable.

Sure – just under $20,000 – pocket change for the indies. Anyone can afford it. Hey, why not give them 50,000. We’ve all got spare cash to just throw away. Sheesh.
