Recently, Convergent Design made some pretty exciting announcements concerning its popular Gemini 4:4:4 recorder. Firstly, they confirmed that Avid DNxHD support would be available as a free firmware upgrade in the third quarter of this year. The supported variants of DNxHD include 1080p24/25/30, 1080i60/50, and 720p60/50 at bit-rates of 220, 145, or 36Mbps. Compared to the uncompressed option, DNxHD 220x will allow for greater record times and smaller file sizes; for example, using two 1.8″ 512GB SSDs, you can record uninterrupted for approximately 12 hours.

In one of our previous posts about the Gemini, a number of people asked about the availability of the supposed ARRIRAW option. Well, a Gemini 4:4:4 unit with the ARRIRAW option is currently at ARRI in Munich awaiting certification. This is great news for ALEXA users, as this will be the most affordable external recorder with full ARRIRAW support. We currently don’t have any pricing info, but Convergent Design expects to have this option available by March 2012.

With these two upcoming enhancements, the Gemini 4:4:4 becomes one of the most versatile and powerful recorders on the market today. Read the full press release on Convergent Design’s website.
