AJA Releases Major Update for Ki Pro & Ki Pro Mini

AJA clearly loves its customers, because they just released a nice Valentine’s Day surprise update for the Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini. Software version 3.0 finally adds support for recording to ExpressCards on the Ki Pro, as well as camera metadata for both. The Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini can now read the metadata from the RED One and EPIC, including reel name, clip name and take information. On the Canon XF series and C300, you can now trigger recording on the Ki Pro (and Mini) via SDI commands, completely independent of your timecode settings. Our testing shows that this setting also works for the Sony PMW-F3, so you can now trigger recording directly from the camera without relying on timecode changes to do so.

Speaking of timecode, the Ki Pro Mini can now also read HDMI timecode from the Sony NEX-FS100 and other NEX series cameras. The announced support for DNxHD on the Ki Pro Mini was not included with this update, but nevertheless it is a great update for any Ki Pro and Ki Pro Mini users.

    You can also have BITC and ‘REC’ status on the SDI OUT… Very handy for the solo operator using an additional EVF – a good ‘Yes, I am definitely recording’ symbol.

    I set the TC in to TC value and not SDI RP 188, Armed Recording to Record Key not TC/Rec Key Camera Data to C300, I have an F3, just to make sure I put my TC on the F3 to free run the Mini starts and stops now with what I assume the SDI data from the F3. I don’t want to use this in the field just yet so I have a call into AJA tech support to see if the SDI data coming from the C300 is the same as that coming out of the F3.

    From our testing so far, it seems like the C300 SDI data is the same as the F3. The F3 triggered the Ki Pro Mini consistently.

    Yes, after an hour it worked without problem, however as stated on page 48 of the manual no camera data is transferred, I checked this out using Avid AMA and no camera data was present.  But this still is a great improvement to be able to trigger the Mini using SDI data.

    Is there a stand out winner among the Off board recorders like the Ki Pro, samurai, or pix 240? I want one to use with an Epic to record ProRes or DNxHD for my corporate clients that don’t want to deal with the R3D files.

    For use with the Epic both the Ki Pro Mini and PIX240 will read file names off the output, so they both work well. Right now the PIX will give you DNxHD and ProRes, AJA is still working on that in the Ki Pro Mini. So really those two are pretty close, it might come down to size, weight, and memory cards really.
