Today, our friends Paul Berner and Neil Munroe from Hi-Def Pictures came by to check out the Sony F3 and our new HDx35 Optical Adapter. The adapter allows the use of 2/3″ lenses on Super 35mm-size sensor cameras like the F3, ALEXA and RED One. Paul and Neil put the adapter on the F3 with an Angenieux 2/3″ Zoom Lens and took some quick shots outside our shop in New York City. They shot 1080 24p footage, as well as slow motion footage in 720p. We were all impressed with the results, and we think you will be too. Watch the video above to see what they shot.

Note: Camera was set to default picture profile settings, and a slight gamma shift was added in post.

This is veery impressive being able to achieve shallower depth of field that you would on a normal 2/3 inch sensor. The more I see from this camera the more impressed I am.

Yes we can power the lens servo off a battery powertap with a special cable. In this test they just did it manually.

Careful there, the DOF is essentially the same as on a normal 2/3 sensor.

It just increases the size of the image circle to be compatible with an F3, the image will be essentially the same as on a 2/3 camera. When it says the adapter loses 2.5 stops of light, that is because it is taking the normal image from the 2/3″ lens and spreading out the light over a larger area.

It is a great option for using ENG lenses on an F3 as long as you dont mind your f1.8 lens being an f4.5 wide open and dont mind the compromises of ENG lenses. I see a fair amount of halation and CA in those videos even in the lowest quality viewing mode.

The magnification is 2.7x and the light loss is 2.5 stops. So a 2/3″ lens that is 10mm T2 becomes an effective 27mm T4/5.6. The T-stop holds true for both exposure and depth of field characteristics. If one removed the optics and replaced them with a 35mm format 27mm T 4/5.6 lens then the depth of field and firld of view characteristics would be identical.

There are excellent 2/3″ format lenses available. The one used in the video is a more budget priced model, but the higher end models easily rival if not surpass available 35PL lenses.

A lens is not always about it’s fastest T-stop. These lenses offer a zoom range far beyond anything made for the 35PL format, and in a vastly smaller form factor with a built in zoom motor. For documentary-style shooting they are a great value.

Likewise the F3′s sole virtue is more than it’s large sensor or low light capability. It is an extraordinarily low noise sensor, with an amazing Dynamic Range. It also is capable of outputting 4:4:4 and S-Log, yielding amazing image quality in a compact and affordable form.

why is an 10mm objektiv 2/3″ like a 27mm 35mm? if i match lenses with the pcam-calculator between 2/3″ and 35mm a 10mm 2/3″ should be a 24mm 35mm. am i wrong and why?

Perhaps you are using the wrong format of 35mm in Pcam. Is it Super-35? The diagonal of a 2/3″ sensor is 11mm. The diagonal of a Super-35 3-perf frame is 28.5mm. a 2.6x difference. Because of variances in many lenses, the HDx35 is built with a 2.7x magnification to insure proper sensor coverage.

Does it allow auto iris?

Yes, the HDx35 Mk. II will work just fine on that camera and allow 4K capture. The new HDx35 Mk II uses the UMS universal mount so the PL can be swapped for a Canon EF mount, as is natively found on the Blackmagic Design camera.
