Sony has many different software applications for viewing and ingesting XDCAM and XDCAM EX footage on Mac and PC. From XDCAM Transfer to XDCAM EX Clip Browser to XDCAM Proxy Viewer – things can get a little confusing. Sony has taken all these tools and combined them into one powerful piece of software. Their XDCAM Browser works with all of the XDCAM footage types (Disc and SxS), making your post process much easier. Here is a short review of a pre-release version of the new software.
When you first launch the software, you’ll see that it looks very much like the XDCAM EX Clip Browser with two explorer windows and a preview window.
In the preview window, you can subclip your video, edit metadata, and see all relevant clip information.
Clips from both ProDisc and SxS cards can be copied to the hard drive easily with the “Copy All” function.
XDCAM Browser can also export your material to a variety of formats. All you need to do is chose your clips and set your export format. Some of the formats require an additional plug-in from Main Concept.
Final Cut Pro users will be happy to find that importing XDCAM footage from the new browser is supported. In FCP, choose File->Import->Sony XDCAM Browser.
Then in XDCAM Browser you can select your clips and chose to “Register for Final Cut Pro.” This will then start the conversion into QuickTime to allow editing.
The software will be available for Mac and PC sometime in November.
