OConnor Engineering has made industry-standard tripods for decades. Recently the company announced the launch of a camera accessory line, and the first product is the CFF-1 studio follow focus. Full of versatile features and built with OConnor quality, the CFF-1 offers features not available in any other follow focus. Recently OConnor loaned me a prototype unit to test. Abel is taking deposits now, and we expect to ship in April. Take a look at the video to see some of the many features of the CFF-1.

NOTE: The second wheel is an optional accessory and does not come standard with the follow focus. The final unit may look different from this prototype.

When LED lights first entered our industry a few years ago, they were small on-camera units with an array of emitters spitting light out all over the place. The technology has evolved, and now fixtures such as the Outsight Creamsource offer high efficiency lensed light with a variety of functions. Watch the video to see some of the functionality of this new light. Abel is the exclusive North American reseller for Outsight and will introduce Creamsource to the US market at NAB 2010.

Abel is now taking pre-orders for the new Hot Rod 7D-PL Mod for the Canon 7D. In this video, I sat down with Illya Friedman, president of Hot Rod Cameras, and discussed his latest design.

The Hot Rod 7D-PL Mod is a custom modification that allows the use of any 35mm PL-mount cinema lenses on the 7D, an important addition now that HDSLRs are being utilized in more and more professional environments. The 7D-PL Mod can be purchased for your existing 7D, as well as part of a Deluxe Kit, which includes a modified Canon 7D, a PL adapter, support system and handles. Check out the video to learn more about this exciting mod!

NOTE: Abel is now accepting pre-orders for this item. The first units will be ready to ship around the second week of April. Abel Cine Tech is the exclusive re-seller of this item. You may also be interested in our Canon 7D-PL FAQ.

On National Geographic’s Repossessed, a reality show about a company that confronts people in order to repossess their vehicles, being able to capture authentic, emotional moments as they are happening is a must. Enter AJA’s Ki Pro tapeless recording device.

Bradley Levin, director of Repossessed and co-executive director of Stick Figure Productions, knew that being able to record without interruptions was crucial to the show. “Last season…we captured onto 33-minute DVCPRO HD tapes. Every 33 minutes we had to stop to change tapes, which was very disruptive – particularly with the nature of the material that we shoot.”

After attending an Emerging Technologies workshop at Abel, he came away impressed with the versatility and portability of the Ki Pro. Levin and the show’s DP Antonio Rossi devised a special rig that consisted of two Iconix HD lipstick cameras and two AJA Ki Pros. The whole thing could be installed quickly and easily onto whatever car or truck the crew were shooting. “Ki Pro enabled four hours of continuous recording which has been ideal for our fast-paced production environment. Once we went into editorial, we could FireWire the SSD drives and bring our material right into Final Cut Pro. It couldn’t get any easier,” Levin says. Along with the Ki Pro’s low power consumption and compact size, he also praised the device’s rugged construction, “The Ki Pros worked flawlessly…through rough weather conditions, in a car during high speed getaways, going up and down ramps, on rough roads, and in the back of a tow truck hauling a heavy load…The Ki Pros performed beautifully in every situation and climate during a rigorous shooting schedule.”

A new plugin from Canon is available for Final Cut Pro and is free to download. Final Cut Pro users (versions 6.0.3 – current 7.0) will be able to ingest footage from the 1D Mark IV, 5D Mark II and 7D through “Log and Transfer”. This is a huge step forward for HDSLR shooters, because it greatly improves the workflow in FCP. Here is some basic info on what the plugin allows:

  • Clips ingested using “Log & Transfer”
  • Archiving
  • Timecode Generation
  • Auto File Import
  • Auto Transcode
  • Auto Data Input
  • Selectable ProRes formats in FCP7
  • Selectable ProRes formats in FCP6

canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-topCanon has released ANOTHER firmware update for the 5D Mark II. The last firmware (2.0.3) had a small bug in it, which caused audio to stop recording when using the custom modes C1, C2, or C3. This is not a big deal for us movie shooters, but the good news is Canon has addressed the issue and released firmware 2.0.4. Download the new version here. Thanks Canon for the quick fix.

Yesterday, Abel teamed up with Canon to help celebrate the release of its highly anticipated firmware upgrade for the 5D Mark II. Throughout the day clients brought in their cameras, and technicians from Abel and Canon performed free upgrades. Multiple Canon cameras were set up on the showroom floor, fully rigged-out with various audio and stabilization accessories. This gave our guests a chance to try out the various HDSLR setups for themselves. In the evening Abel was bustling, as the formal presentations were standing room only. Jon Fauer, editor of the Film & Digital Times, started things off by discussing how HDSLRs have impacted the industry. Ed Meyer from Canon gave a thorough review of all the new features in the newest 2.0.3 firmware – including 1080 24P. The evening concluded with Abel’s own Andy Shipsides giving a run through and demonstration of the various accessories made for HDSLR filmmaking. After the sessions, Canon representatives and Abel staff were available for discussion and, of course, showing off the cameras. Check out our gallery of images above.

Thank you to everyone who made our “party” a success!!
